Jesus in a Jazz Club
Well, the album is out on Spotify and the launch concert was a wonderful success. Thank you so much for your investment into this project. I am so encouraged that as missionaries in Berlin, God is giving us opportunities to go into the world's spaces to bring the gospel, to be his representatives.
I think specifically of Jesus’ words when he says ‘the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.’ I am so encouraged that as missionaries in Berlin, God is giving us opportunities to go into the world's spaces to bring the gospel, to be his representatives. We are in hopeful anticipation for what the Lord will do in people's lives through the ‘Berlin Psalm project’.
What was a blessing for me personally was to see people in the audience who we have been getting to know as friends and praying for over the whole time we have been in Berlin (9 years now.) It demonstrates the significance in mission, of being a long term presence with people.
It was a wonderful night! It was quite incredible to play music from the psalms to a secular audience in Berlin. It was very well received. The owner of the club absolutely loved it and invited us back next year before we could even ask him. He said there was an atmosphere with the band that he just hadn’t experienced before.
Here are some of the quotes from the night:
‘I can’t believe I was praising God in a jazz club’ (audience member)
‘We were actually worshiping the Lord on stage’ (Trombone player Will)
‘Jesus really suffered more than we can ever imagine. It felt like Jesus was here tonight.’ I told him that there were people really praying for the night and he said ‘Well there you go!’ (From a non-believer, reflecting on the song ‘Psalms of Lament’.)
A musician in the band told us that he would like to come to our church and play creative jazz music but asked if we could meet Sunday afternoon. (The reason is that he is one of the resident musicians at a notorious sex club in berlin and doesn’t get home until 5am Sunday morning).
We will play next year also in another jazz club in Berlin. Please continue to pray for us!
